Today was our second day at the house site, and our first day of vacation Bible school with the village kids. It was another great but busy day. We started VBS with just 4 kids (one of whom snuck back out the door almost immediately). Mom's plan of waving a wind sock - our arts and crafts project for the day - and shouting "come on in" in English didn't work to recruit any more kids. One of the teachers at the creche (preschool) then explained "the kids are waiting for someone to call them." I have no idea what she said in Zulu, but kids started trickling in and soon we had more than 30. They were slow to warm up to us but I think had decided we were alright by the end of the morning. We sang songs, made wind socks and told a Bible story. They seemed pretty excited to take their artwork home.
Meanwhile back at the construction site, they had made great progress on the front off the house and were up on scaffolding working on the back walls. They had a smaller team with which to lug 100 lb bags of cement up the hill and mix cement by hand, so they were working very hard.
I think the highlight of my day was that when we arrived back at the work site the neighborhood kids remembered us and ran up to the bus to give us hugs. Anna and Robin painted nails with them (and got some lovely manicures themselves). We also got out some crayons and simple coloring books, and the kids cheered to see them.
